AUDITION GUIDE – PETER PAN JR

Peter Pan Jr features a robust cast of beloved ensemble characters; Pirates, Lost Boys, and Neverland Natives are the mainstay of this timeless production. Peter Pan, Jr is adapted for the youth stage and provides a unique experience for each performer to explore and create memorable characters in an ensemble, developing invaluable skills to grow as an actor.

ABOUT

Peter Pan Jr — Adapted from the 1954 Broadway production (not the Disney version), is based on J.M. Barrie’s classic tale and features a memorable score by Morris “Moose” Charlap and Jule Styne with lyrics by Carolyn Leigh and Betty Comden and Adolph Green.

SYNOPSIS

Peter and his mischievous fairy sidekick, Tinkerbell, visit the nursery of the Darling children late one night and, with a sprinkle of pixie dust, begin a magical journey across the stars that none of them will ever forget. In the adventure of a lifetime, the travelers come face to face with a ticking crocodile, a fierce native tribe, a band of villainous pirates and, of course, the treacherous Captain Hook.

CAST OF CHARACTERS

Peter Pan – Peter Pan is a boy without a care in the world. Originally written for and cast as a female, this role is for any gender identifying with a soaring can-do spirit who most certainly “won’t grow up!”

Wendy - Wendy is the eldest of the Darling children and has a certain maternal quality. Wendy is very bright, ever-practical and ready for an adventure! warm presence and great singing voice. Female identifying.

John – John is the middle Darling child and has an amicable and open presence. A little more proper than his younger brother. Strong acting and singing role who is the perfect complement to his siblings. Male identifying.

Michael – Michael is the youngest Darling boy and seems to have unlimited energy. Strong acting role for someone who can easily portray the youngest and most stubborn of the Darling children. Male identifying.

Nana – Nana is a large puppet, A role for a performer who is unafraid to jump in and play this iconic part of the story. This performer should have a knack for physicality and be comfortable making bold acting choices. Puppetry experience a plus, but not necessary! Any Gender identifying.

Mrs. Darling – Mrs. Darling is the mother of Wendy, John and Michael, and she is the perfect picture of a mother. A strong acting and singing role for someone who reads onstage as an older character. Female identifying.

Mr. Darling – Mr. Darling is the father of Wendy, John and Michael, and he is a man with one concern: keeping his house in order. Male identifying.

Liza – Liza is the Darling’s housekeeper who always seems to be in a bit of a frenzy as she tries to keep everyone pleased. This is a great cameo role for an actor who can make strong character choices. Female identifying.

Tiger Lily – Tiger Lily is the fearless leader of the Neverland Native tribe, the Brave Girls. A role for a performer who can command the stage and is a good actor, singer and mover. Female identifying.

Brave Girls – Neverland Natives. Strong and kind, they are an exuberant band of characters, proficient movers as well as competent singers. Brave Girl #1, Brave Girl #2, Small Brave Girl. Female identifying.

Lost Boys – The Lost Boys are a group of lads who live in Neverland without a care in the world! Strong acting, singing and moving roles of Nibs, Slightly, Curley, Tootles, Twin #1 and Twin # 2.  Any gender identifying.

Pirates – The Pirates are a gaggle of villains who are looking to cause some trouble. For male, female performers who can act, move well, and aren’t afraid to sing! Featured roles: Noodles, Cecco, and Starkey. Any gender identifying.

Captain Hook - Captain Hook, the leader of the Pirates, has a bone to pick… or rather a Peter Pan to hook! A strong singing and acting role, but above all, with great comedic timing. Though Captain Hook is the villain of the show, he’s also a bit of a comical character who just can’t seem to get what he wants. He has to be as treacherous to the Lost Boys as he is a complete wimp around the Crocodile. Any gender identifying.

Smee – Smee is Captain Hook’s sidekick who wants nothing more than to see Captain Hook succeed in his evil plotting.Strong acting role and should complement Captain Hook. Any gender identifying.

Crocodile – Like Nana, the Crocodile is a silent role for a young performer who can take a leap and become the wickedest beast that ever was! Any gender identifying.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES
Indians — Parts of this adaptation have been respectfully updated from the original 1954 production. The “Indians” in Neverland are referred to as the Neverland Natives. These characters are called “Brave Girls” in the script. Due to the authors’ original allusion to the Northeastern Native Americans, some of the Brave Girls’ musical numbers may be sung in the language of the Wyandotte tribe. The story will be told as scripted, with minor adjustments to support the roles of Tiger Lily and the Brave Girls as Neverland Natives.

Neverland (Good if interested Lost Boy, Pirate, Brave Girl or any role.)

I have a place where dreams are born,

And time is never planned.

It’s not on any chart,

You must find it with your heart.

Never Never Land.

It might be miles beyond the moon,

Or right there where you stand.

Just keep an open mind,

And then suddenly you’ll find

Never Never Land.

I’m Flying (Good if interested in Peter, a Lost Boy, a Darling child, )

I’m flying
(Flying, flying, flying)
Look at me way up high,
Suddenly here am I
I’m flying.

I’m flying
(Flying, flying, flying)
I can soar
I can weave and what’s more
I’m not even trying

High up, and as light as I can be.
I must be a sight lovely to see.

I’m flying.
(Flying, flying, flying)
Nothing will stop me now:
Higher still look at how
I can zoom around,
‘Way up off the ground
I’m flying.

Let me help you count your sheep

Hooks Tarentella (Good if interested in Captain Hook, Smee, Pirate, Mr. Darling) – Me thinks I see a spark,
A gleam, a glimmer of a plan
With which, perhaps,
It may redeem me honor as a man
Kidnap Wendy, seize the boys,
And you’ll have Hook to thank
For when the time is ripe you’ll see the children walk the plank!

Oh, when was such a princely plot concocted by another
To murder all the boys and keep the Wendy for our mother
Hey!

AUDITION SIDES

SIDE #1- PETER PAN & WENDY

PETER PAN

What’s your name?

WENDY

Wendy Moira Angela Darling. What’s your name?

PETER PAN

Peter Pan.

WENDY

Where do you live?

PETER PAN

Second to the right and straight on till morning.

WENDY

What a funny address!

PETER PAN

No, it isn’t.

WENDY

I mean, is that what they put on your letters?

PETER PAN

Don’t get any letters.

WENDY

But your mother gets letters?

PETER PAN

Don’t have a mother.

(pause)

I can’t get my shadow to stick on.

WENDY

It has come off? How awful. Why it must be sewn on. I shall sew it on for you.

(WENDY gets her sewing box.)

PETER PAN

Thank you.

(WENDY begins attaching PETER’s shadow.)

SIDE #2- WENDY, MICHAEL, JOHN, PETER PAN, LIZA

WENDY

John, Michael, wake up – there’s a boy here who is going to teach us to fly.

MICHAEL

There is?

JOHN

Then I’ll get up at once.

(NANA barks from offstage.)

JOHN

Out with the lights! Someone’s coming!

(MICHAEL turns off the lights and everyone hides. LIZA enters being dragged by NANA.)

LIZA

There, you see! They are perfectly safe and sound asleep in bed.

(NANA barks.)

Now no more! Come along, you naughty dog!

(They exit, NANA barking loudly. The others emerge from hiding.)

PETER PAN

All clear!

JOHN

Can you really fly?

PETER PAN

I’ll teach you.

MICHAEL

How do you do it?

SIDE 3- CAPTAIN HOOK, SMEE

CAPTAIN HOOK

Most of all I want their captain, Peter Pan. ’Twas he cut off me arm. Oh, I have waited long to shake hands with him with this.

SMEE

Yet I have oft heard you say your hook was worth a score of hands – for combing the hair, and other homely uses.

CAPTAIN HOOK

Aye, Smee, if I were a mother, I would pray that me children be born with this…

(indicating the hook)

… instead of that.

(indicating his hand)

But Pan flung me hand to a crocodile that happened to be passing by.

SMEE

I have often noticed your strange dread of crocodiles.

CAPTAIN HOOK

Not of crocodiles, but of that one crocodile. He liked me hand so much that he has followed me ever since – from land to land, from sea to sea, he follows the ship, licking his lips for the rest of me.

SMEE

In a way it is sort of a compliment.

CAPTAIN HOOK

Well, I want no such compliments! Smee, that crocodile would have got me long ere this if he could have crept upon me unawares. But by some lucky chance he swallowed a clock—

SMEE

A clock!

CAPTAIN HOOK

And it goes on – tick, tock, tick – within him; and so, before he can reach me I hear the tick.

SMEE

Some day the clock will run down, and then he’ll get you.

CAPTAIN HOOK

Ay, that is the fear that haunts me.

(CAPTAIN HOOK sits on a large mushroom and then

suddenly jumps back up.)

Ooooh!

SIDE #4- MR. DARLING,  MRS. DARLING

MR. DARLING
You know, Mother, sometimes I think it’s a mistake to have a dog for a nurse.

MRS. DARLING
George, we must keep Nana. I will tell you why. My dear, when I came into this room tonight I saw a face at the window.

MR. DARLING

A face at the window, two floors up?

MRS. DARLING

It was the face of a little boy; he was trying to get in.

MR. DARLING

Impossible.

MRS. DARLING
But wait— The boy was not quite alone. He was accompanied by – I don’t know how to describe it – by a ball of light that darted about the room like a living thing!

MR.DARLING

That is very unusual!

MRS. DARLING
George, what can all this mean?

MINI MONOLOGUES

PETER

[Tinker Bell drinks the poison intended for Peter pan.]

Tinker Bell, what’s the matter with you? (bells) It was poisoned! You drank it to save my life!! Tink! Dear,Tink.(bells) Your light is growing faint, and if it goes out, that means you’re dead. (bells) You say…(bells) You could get well if…(celeste)…if children believed in fairies.

[Peter rises and throws out his arms, pleading]

Do you believe? Oh please, please believe! If you believe, wherever you are, clap your hands and she’ll hear you!

CAPTAIN HOOK

How still the night is. Nothing sounds alive. Now is the hours when children in their homes are a-bed – their lips bright- browned with the goodnight chocolate, and their tongues drowsily searching for belated crumbs housed insecurely on their shining cheeks. Compare with them the captive children on this boat. Split me the infinitives, but ’tis me hour of triumph!

(laughs) At last I’ve reached me peak! I’m the greatest villain of all time.

CURLY
Oh, but now I see a wonderfuller thing. [spying something off in the distance] H igh over the lagoon. I see a great big white bird! It is flying this way! It looks weary as it flies. Oh I can hear it moaning, “Poor wendee, poor wendee”. I think there are birds called Wendees. See, here it comes! Look! Hey, there’s Tinkerbell. What’s she sayin’ now. She says Peter wants us to shoot down the Wendee. Well, let’s do what Peter wishes. Out of my way, Tink. I’ll shoot it down. [draws bow and arrow] I’ve got it! Peter will be so pleased!

TIGER LILY

[captured by the pirates]

I’ll not tell you a thing! I uphold the honor of my tribe. I do not fear death. Peter Pan and the Lost Boys — they will rescue me. Peter is the sun, and the moon, and the stars! You are no match for him.

SLIGHTLY
Hello, I’m Slightly. Yep, that’s my true name. When we came to Neverland Peter had to make up names for you, but my mother pinned my name on my clothes I was lost in. “Slightly Soiled” — that’s me!

JOHN (or Michael)
Peter, you can really fly? Could you teach us? Could you teach us to jump on the wind’s back and away we’ll go! Instead of sleeping in our silly beds we might be flying about saying funny things to the stars – ha-ha! How is it done? Think lovely thoughts? Like what? Fishing… picnics… sailing… Christmas!
